PREREQUISITES:

Proficiency in Data Structures (e.g. CSCI 2720), Computer Architecture (e.g. CSCI 4720) and C or Java. General OS background assumed, equivalent to CSCI 4730 or 6730 (processes, threads, synchronization and concurrency issues). No prior knowledge of discrete event simulation or parallel simulation mechanism assumed.

This course is an in depth introduction to the field of parallel and distributed simulation. It will cover the foundational algorithms and techniques that have been developed over the last 20 years up to and including the current state of the art. Topics will range from synchronization algorithms, data distribution techniques, parallel and distributed applications running on top of simulation executives to high-performance analytic simulation and distributed virtual environments. In addition establishing a comprehensive theoretical framework you will extend the current research through hands-on projects. Many of the suggested research projects may lead to MS or PhD thesis work.

Unless otherwise specified, exams are closed-book and no additional materials may be used.

Missing an exam: absence due to serious illness will be an acceptable reason for missing an exam. Doctor's diagnostic note is required. The final grade will be scaled accordingly.
