Welcome new students

We are pleased to have 55 new graduate students joining the department this semester, the largest cohort ever.

Our grad students come from highly respected schools from many different countries. We wish them a successful year at the UGA Computer Science Department.

Welcome to our new faculty member Dr. Tianming Liu.

Dr. Tianming Liu is an assistant professor of Computer Science and Bio-Imaging Research Center (BIRC).

Welcome back to Julia Couto

Dr. Couto is an instructor of Computer Science. Her research interests include data bases, data mining, and data clustering.

She received her PhD from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Madrid, Spain.

Congratulations to Prof. Doshi (PI) for receiving a two year grant from AFOSR for his project titled "Individual Decision Making in Large-Scale and Uncertain Multiagent Environments". Prof. Doshi will collaborate with Prof. Goodie (Co-PI) of the Psychology Dept., UGA.

Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate, Haibo Zhao, for winning the 2008-09 UGA's Dissertation Completion Award. Haibo's research on Web services is supervised by Prof. Doshi.

Prof. Don Potter and the AI Center are featured in an article in the Athens Banner-Herald local newspaper.

Congratulations to Prof. Doshi who received a grant from NIH for the project titled "Semantics and Services enabled Problem Solving Environment for Trypanosoma-cruzi". Prof. Doshi participates in a 4-year, $1.5M grant, which will be shared almost equally between Wright State University, UGA (Prof. Rick Tarleton and Prof. Doshi) and Stanford University.

New faculty

Dr. Tianming Liu joined the UGA CS department in August, 2008.

His research interests include biomedical image analysis, computational neuroscience, and biomedical informatics.

Before he moved to UGA, Dr. Liu was a faculty member in Weill Medical College of Cornell University (2007-2008) and Harvard Medical School (2005-2007). Dr. Liu was trained as a postdoc in neuroimaging in the University of Pennsylvania (2002-2004) and Harvard Medical School (2004-2005).

Dr. Liu received his PhD in computer science from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2002.

Dr. Liu is the recipient of the Microsoft Fellowship Award (2000-2002) and the NIH NIBIB K01 Career Award (2007-2011).


Congratulations to Dr. Rabia Jafri, for completing her Ph.D. Her dissertation was titled "Fusion of Face and Gait for Human Recognition" and supervised by Prof. Arabnia

Congratulations to Dr. Maciej Janik for completing his Ph.D. His dissertation was titled "Training-Less Ontology-Based Text Categorization" and supervised by Prof. Kochut

Congratulations to Dr. Mucheng Zhang for completing his Ph.D. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the
laboratory of Professor Shaying Zhao (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,
and Institute of Bioinformatics, UGA). His dissertation was titled " "Monte Carlo Simulation of Interacting Electron Models by a New Determinant Approach" and supervised by Profs. Robinson and Schuttler

Congratulations to Dr. Shaohua Xie for completing his Ph.D. His dissertation was titled "Evaluating the effectiveness of diagrammatic notations in supporting the design, comprehension, and maintenance of concurrent software" and supervised by Prof. Kraemer
