How to Satisfy Your Degree Requirements

Upper Division Electives (Franklin College Requirement)

Any course at the +3000 level, including additional Computer Science courses.

The Franklin College requires 39 hours of upper-division classes (that is, classes numbered 3000 and above). Your CS major courses will provide 24 upper-division hours, which means you need 15 more hours -- normally, five upper division elective courses.

The purpose of this requirement is to encourage you to develop academic interests outside your own major. If you've developed an interest in some other academic area while taking your Core Curriculum courses, you may wish to consider a minor in that area. Otherwise, you can "dabble" in literature, history, math and science, etc. to satisfy this requirement.

A list of Franklin College upper division courses with one or no prerequisites can be found at http://ben.franklin.uga.edu/saga/data/upperelc.htm.
Many departments block their courses to non-majors.

Additional Suggestions:
Courses outside of Franklin College that CS students have taken and have zero or one prerequisite include and are not blocked (or courses that are Franklin but not listed on their list):
JOUR 3310, TELE 3010,
ETES 5010, 5020, 5025, etc,
EBUS 5000 level classes
ENTO 3740
ANTH 4020

CMLT 3000 level are not on Franklin College's list either, but CS majors have taken these - such as CMLT 3150, 3180, 4110

Note: If you find others not on the list, please e-mail them to: mhm@cs.uga.edu. I will add them to the list.

Area B - Institutional Options (UGA Core Curriculum)

Anyone graduating with 120 hours will almost automatically fill this requirement of 4-5 elective hours. Don't worry about it until you get ready for a graduation check.

Area C - Fine Arts and Humanities (UGA Core Curriculum)

Note: Computer Science students must also fill the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences fine arts requirement. For this reason, students should take one class from Area C Fine Arts and one from Area C Humanities. This will fulfil both the CORE requirement of 2 classes from Area C and the Franklin College requirement.

Area D - Laboratory Science

Four-hour Science courses with Lab (UGA Core Curriculum)

Notes:
  • Computer Science students are required by Franklin College to take both a physical science and a biological science.
  • CORE requires 2 four-hour lab science courses.
  • CSCI 1301-1301L can be used as a four-hour lab science course in Area D of CORE, but it is not a physical or biological science.
This means that either the physical or the biological science (but not both) can be a three-hour class and can be taken outside of CORE and/or as an upper division elective. However, we encourage you to take the standard four-hour laboratory science classes in physical and biological science.

Computer Science Major Electives

You need 12 hours of CS electives. Normally this means three four-hour classes. However some of our classes such as CSCI 4670 and CSCI 4550 are three-hour classes. If you take these classes you will need to either take four electives or find an directed study class (CSCI 4950).

Any 4000-level Computer Science class may be used as an elective. This includes the Systems Design and Application Design classes. For example, if you take both Database Management and Software Engineering, then one of these satisfies your Application Design requirement and the other can be used as a CS elective.

You may also use 4 hrs. of upper-division MATH as a CS elective. Most MATH courses are 3 hrs.

Directed Study (CSCI 4950)

Directed study classes involve you learning on your own, either from books or by working on a project, under the direction of a CS faculty member. Many of our faculty members have opportunities for undergraduates to participate in their research areas through directed study. If you are excited by a particular course and want to to know more, you may consider asking the prof about a directed study.
